| Ahiru - Robert Webb's Canard Glider |
|
Have a good look - what an unusual, still beautifully designed slope glider. The builder is Robert Webb from Palm Desert, California, and the model was one of his senior projects at Art Center College of Design, 1982. Robert said this in his e-mail:
"The main wing was from a kit glider. But the rest was hand made. It was too heavy for thermal soaring, but on a windy day, slope soaring, it was a blast! If I was to build another one, I would make it 80% lighter and have a wonderful 'scale like' glider. If I had not been forced to sell it, I wanted to play with adding power and lift/drag devices.
I used Andrew Lennon's formulas for calculating CG and lift points. His writing inspired me to do full calculations. I stuck with the airfoil from the kit glider to save time. Mr. Lennon had several magazine articles and a book or two on canard designs.
I plan on making more when I retire and have the time. The canard is one of the most efficient forms besides a pure flying wing. It's also one of the more pleasing to the eye. Well, to my eye anyway!
It was an Art Center College of Design project. I was a Senior Transportation Design major at the time. One of the things I wanted to point out to my instructor and fellow students was that Formula 1 and Indy open wheel cars were merely canards flipped upside down.
The design of race car aerodynamics is akin to aircraft design only you want the vehicle to stick to the street and not fly up. It is said that if you could somehow get a formula 1 car to drive 200+ miles an hour up to the top of the roof of a large tunnel, it would stay stuck to the ceiling blasting along. Aerodynamics at any speed over 30 mph is powerful stuff.
If you can see the small hand launched glider next to 'Ahiru' you will get an idea of what I want to make next. An electric ducted fan canard with retracts, flaps and slots as lifting devices.
But, that will have to wait. I'm in the process of restoring a 1981 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce and it gets all of my leisure time attention."
